Fresh Pots was a hardware/software project that connected a Mr. Coffee machine to the Internet, triggering a Dave Grohl “FRESH POTS!” alert whenever a new pot of coffee was brewed.
Background
The project was inspired by Dave Grohl’s famous Fresh Pots video where he talks about his caffeine addiction during the recording of Foo Fighters’ “Wasting Light” album.
How It Worked
- An Arduino monitored the coffee maker’s power consumption
- When brewing was detected, it sent a signal to a web server
- The server would trigger notifications: tweets, Slack messages, and audio alerts
- Office colleagues would hear Dave yelling “FRESH POTS!” from their computers
