Fresh Pots
Fresh Pots was my solo VHX hackday project in March 2016: a Raspberry Pi and a speaker wired up to the office coffee maker, so Dave Grohl could tell everyone when there were FRESH POTS.
Background
The name comes from Dave Grohl in FRESH POTS!, studio footage from a 2009 Them Crooked Vultures session, uploaded in March 2010, of Grohl yelling “fresh pots!” and drinking a truly concerning amount of coffee. Know Your Meme has the full history.
How it worked
- Two buttons on the Pi’s GPIO pins, plus an LED
- Button one plays a random clip of Dave yelling “FRESH POTS!” through a one-channel speaker
- Button two waits 6 minutes, which is how long our coffee maker took, then posts “FRESH POTS!!!” to our #vhx Slack channel
- About 80 lines of Python, starting from a MAKE soundboard tutorial
